Power On, Power Off

Sit back or somewhat upright in a chair. Get comfortable. Let your feet rest flat on the floor.
This is a body, attention, energy exercise.
You will practice being in control of tightness, of looseness, high energy and low energy.
You’ll turn power on and then you’ll turn your own power off.
Let’s begin with toes. Wiggle your toes to wake them up. Now be still.
Ready? Tighten your toes, like you can make fists with them. Try to only turn on the power in your own toes. Just toes. Let other areas of your body rest, as best you can.
Breathe in while toes are tight. And then when you breathe out, let them ease and rest.
Try the toes one more time – breathe in to turn the power on and exhale to let the energy go.

Give your legs a chance. Above the knees and below. Feet and toes too.
Inhale and turn on the power of your legs, straighten them if that helps. Tight, tense, all the muscles. Breathe in, add even more energy.
Exhale and let go. Legs go soft.

One more round with legs. Ready?
Start breathing in, turn on the energy, legs are working hard.
Then turn it off, with you out-breath. Soften your muscles.

Now we’ll practice regulating with our hands in the same way.
Make fists and inhale, pause for a moment, then exhale and rest.
Add straight or bent arms this time. Fists and arms get tight, power on, breathe in.
power off, breathe out to let go.
Arms and hands one more time. Turn it on with an in-breath, turn it off with an out-breath.

Finally, let your whole body try, all together.
If you want, add your face muscles, crinkle up your eyes, lips, cheeks.
Breathe in and turn on the power to your arms, hands, legs and feet.
Feel the energy in your body.
Now turn the power off while you breathe out slowly and fully.
Breath goes all of the way out.
Body goes all of the way soft.
Power off.
See if you can stay still, just for a little. Rest.

Turning off the extra energy might make it easier to settle – in body and in mind.
Notice how you might feel different in your body, now that you have practiced being in control of yourself – regulating your own energy.
When you have a moment, at your desk or waiting in line, try Power On, Power Off with just your toes or just your hands, match it with your breath and notice how you feel. Practice regulating on your own. Power On, Power Off.
